How do you build a firewall to block a specific website.?

I want to block myspace.com from my kids so they can't see it. I tried tools and the internet options but it blocked all sites even though I only put myspace in.

use a method not much known about, edit the hosts file.

閳?open notepad - it's in your start menu.

閳?goto file %26gt; open

閳?browse to C:\ WINDOWS\ system32\ drivers\ etc

閳?find the file named 'hosts'

閳?select it, then click 'open'

閳?at the end of the file, add this line, the space in between is a tab:

127.0.0.1 www.myspace.com

閳?save the file with file %26gt; save

the advantages of this over other methods is that you don't need to download any extra software, there is no visible sign to show that sites are being blocked, as many sites can be added as you want, 95% of children OR adults know nothing about the hosts file so working out why they're getting a 'cannot find server' message is near impossible.

to quickly explain how it works:

when you type a web address into a web browser it checks the 'hosts' file first to see if there's an entry for that site along with the site's ip address rather than looking up the ip address manually.

by adding an entry like we did above, when www.myspace.com is used in the address bar, it checks the 'hosts' file and says 'ah there's an entry' then tries to visit 127.0.0.1 - but this is an invalid ip address because it's the local address for your own machine.

if there's a downside to this method, it's that entries into the address bar are taken literally, if we just use myspace.com without the 'www.' it will go to the site but there's nothing to stop myspace.com also being added.

There are a number of software programs that you can use. You can also configure your router if you have one. Do I google search of Internet Filtering to find a software package, they don't cost that much.
